A Deserved Promotion
Earlier this week, the small group weekly Bible study resumed. Though I’ve been teaching weekly Bible studies for a nearly a decade, doing so with new people in a new place is always exciting. And though each of those who attended had been coming to this study at First Bonita for some time, I know they came with their own questions and expectations: how will Ben do it?
That’s probably a part of why I’ve carried a lot of anticipation around the Bible study. Another reason is that it’s one of my favorite things. At the risk of being as corny or quirky as the cats – because I could never pull it off as well as they do – small groups are full of big opportunities. Small groups offer and achieve something special, and there are few things that I enjoy more than getting to discuss – to share and offer, to hear and learn – scripture and theology with those likewise engaged in this journey of discipleship.
So yes, consider this a promotion for small groups, perhaps for the Bible study on Wednesdays (3p in the church office), or for the weekly prayer gatherings on Fridays (9:30a in the sanctuary). Or maybe there’s a small group we need that we don’t yet have, and maybe you will help us get there.
Another reason this is important: the small groups we have are great, and they would be better with you. I have a little spiel I spout at Bible study whenever there’s a first-timer, or, as was the case Wednesday, when I’m the first-timer. It goes a little something like this: If you let me lecture for an hour, trust me: I can and I will. But that’s not the best use of our time; better instead if we have a dialogue. Because my number one goal in Bible study is for you to believe this: you can read scripture.
I went to seminary, twice even. Graduated with honors. Have a fancy title, unique shirts, and have been ordained by The United Methodist Church. But the image of the church in scripture, of a faithful community, has never been “abdicate to the one with the most theological education”, or “highest staff position”, or “largest student loan debt” (don’t go to seminary twice, y’all). We’re called to be a Body of Christ, made up of different perspectives and understandings and experiences and talents and passions.
Which means that not only can you read scripture, but the unique encounter of scripture that you have is valuable; it is a part of the conversation if you’re willing to share it, a gift to our community. You can read scripture, and if you’d like to do so alongside some of your siblings in Christ at First Bonita, you are most welcome.
